What are the best plants to landscape with in Pennsylvania?

We want to add a little color and change our landscaping. I would like to use bulbs as well. What are the best bulbs, bushes, and trees to use?

How do hydrangeas fair in PA? I like their color, but don't want to plant them if they won't grow well. Also, I am looking for a weeping cherry or japanese maple to showcase in my front yard. Any other suggestions or tips on this? Any bulb you wish to plant would do great also, you have to wait till next fall for those. There are too many other plants to suggest to you because you are probably in zone 6 and in that zone a multitude of plants will thrive.
